Scrum Factory - 11. Flanker Channeling and The Role of the Number 8

The roles of each player in channelling the ball to the number 8

Video Subtitles

Now observe the scrum-half putting the ball into a full scrum. You can see the loose head props feet position the strike of the ball and the channel towards the rear of the scrum. The flanker on the left hand side of the scrum has an important role in ensuring that the ball is channeled quickly and under control towards the rear of the scrum particularly in the event that the hookers strike isn't performed as intended. In this example, the ball is struck cleanly, so there is little requirement for the flanker to readjust his own body shape in order to control the ball as such he is able to focus on his role in the forward drive regardless the flanker remains in a pushing position and if necessary, he uses his inside leg to guide and control the ball towards the number 8 at the back in Attack. The number eight main role is to control the ball at the base of the scrum in this clip note how the number 8 has moved the ball across the his right foot and pushed it forward this prevents the opposing scrum-half and following the ball around the scrum by doing so he allows his own scrum-half time and space to play the ball.
