My Dream Lions Team

Trying to consider, you know, the the players and how they contribute as is not easy because of what they what they bring. It's not always exactly the same whatever tour it is. The players do have significant contributions. And that's what I've tried to look at it with each country the Irish significant Irishman Donna lenihan on my first lines Taurus coach because he created such a brilliant midweek side. Donald's Donuts, which help the environment Keith Woods in 1997 again was a character just totally committed to to the rugby and and obviously did well in the test Paul O'Connell who I think was a tremendous captain in 2009. On was in really well and a very significant factor in that environment. But for me the lion who's had a massive impact over three tours, obviously outstanding players Brian O'Driscoll and he trains hard plays with a fantastic commitment, but he's very good off the field as well. And he was Captain in 2005 played in 2001. But again was very significant in in 2009 in just making sure that that that lines environment was as good as it could be thinking about whales again there's been a significant country for supplying lines particularly in the 70s when there were some fantastic names around marriage on and Gareth Edwards the name but to but that again going back to the players I coached, you know, I look at Neil Jenkins in 1997 who's kicking was absolutely phenomenal. It's the best test much kicking Under Pressure. I think I've ever seen anywhere and the way he trained the way he practiced was just an eye-opener Ian Evans again was very successful Lion on the wing in 89 and 93 and 97 again, you know trained hard was just just worked so hard but was very good at talking to others and bringing others in younger players in the later stages 97, but the one I've chosen is Scott Gibbs as a youngster in 93, he came on and was outstanding his enthusiasm his involvement hundred percent. He got the test spot in the end away from will Carling and The in 93 and then in 97 having coming back from rugby league. He was just led to the middle of the field and the physicality against on Africa some of his hits but some of his chat amongst the players the players will still talk about it that he was talking at the South Africans. He was talking to his own players and and they knew that he was dominating physically and mentally the middle of the field so little things like that that people don't realize is so important if a team is going to win and not go on the back foot and gibbsy for me was just phenomenal on that tour in that respect considering England and English players that there's a huge number that have made an impact, you know, particularly more recently in 89. They were significant group Brian more poor Lankford way Dooley Dean Richards, Rob Andrew, you know, who All of very important to the character of that of that tour and the man of the tour like Teague had lost the back row who for me was a just outstanding in the way. He trained and never took things too. Seriously you thought but as soon as you put a line coz on he was as serious as you could be and he was outstanding on that tour and was was the man of the tour more recently obviously in again in 97 Matt Dawson Richard Hill on still Ali Oh Martin Johnson has Captain were were very significant and you know the person the player I would have to choose I think for for having that significance with the Lions Martin Johnson, I've seen what he could do just as a player on the field with his own club Leicester and when he was Against Northampton who I was coaching at the time and the impact he had on the field and just felt that was the sort of player who could be a tremendous role model for for the Lions and he became fantastic captain on on that. Tour in never said too much was very thoughtful about what we're doing what he said how he said it but was very much on side with the tactics and just the way we wanted to play and a great leader and natural leader without saying too much but very clear about what he wanted and how we wanted it and obviously subsequently probably became one of the greatest captains in International Rugby, but 1997 in particularly, he'd come out in 93 as a replacement and made the test place but he's a test match animal all the players. I've mentioned that this match animals, you know. When the pressures on these fellows produced the goods finally if I come to my own country Scotland some great characters who've been online stores and I think character is very important when you putting everything in a mix David Soul. Hope for me was the prop of the 90s outstanding ball handler Ball Carrier as well as a great prop who you know played a significant role in 89 Finn the colder who was Captain an 89 Finley very much his own man would you know quite easily drop himself or any in fact did try to insist that he dropped himself after the first test which I refused and he took things personally, but he was a great natural leader and again fantastic person around other people, which is so important when you're pulling four countries together the player Taken from Scotland would be Gavin Hastings he is. It was a captain in 93 a winner in 89 and a really strong character Big Man Behind when you when he was playing well, he had such an impact on the game and he was such a strong character off the field as well as on it. If I had to choose one of the of the players that have been whilst have been involved coaching. I think it would still be Martin Johnson because of the way he led the 97 lines what he did how he did it and he's own personal performance. He didn't play for the first three weeks, but boy in the when it came to the test matches when it came to how the team was managed how it works then he was just so significant in setting the right environment that created that ability for a team to take on supposedly stronger bigger opponents.
